World Teachers’ Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994 - when it was created by UNESCO - celebrates teachers worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.
A modern day, ethical, twist on the "apple for the teacher" of yesteryear is an Apple Tree Gift Voucher (the tree is planted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).
There are many reasons for choosing to plant a fruit tree in Africa, and here are a just a couple (which may surprise you!):
We reckon that the average person would be able to offset their own carbon footprint by having just 10 trees planted each year. So please think about this when ordering your tree – and if you can’t afford more than one right now, make a pledge to offset your carbon footprint with Wikaniko, as we aim for our target of ten thousand trees!
Order this gift for your teacher (or friend or relative). It will be posted to you, and you can fill in the certificate details, for the ultimate gift that will be much, much more appreciated than a "World Best Teacher" mug!
p.s. Remember you can send a free e-card to your teacher (and join our reminder service so you don't forget next year!).

There are many reasons for choosing to plant a fruit tree in Africa, and here are a just a couple (which may surprise you!):
- Trees grow three times faster in Africa than they do in the UK. Therefore, our trees will help negate the carbon impact on our environment a lot faster.
- A fruit tree planted in the African climate can reach maturity very quickly, providing valuable food for both villagers and animals.
Planting a tree in Africa not only helps offset carbon – it also helps the local villagers, who benefit massively from managed forestry. So we’re helping people as well.
- You immediately begin to offset carbon emissions, and restore the balance from your carbon footprint. The world starts to get back to how it should be, and we give something back to our environment that will last a lifetime.
